"I was so swept away by [this] Gothic...a delicious, supernatural, paranormal spin on Jane Eyre!" —Liz Burns, School Library Journal

"Compelling and romantic; a Jane Eyre for the Modern Age!" —Julie Kagawa, NYT Bestselling Author of The Iron Fey and Talon series

Jane Eyre meets gritty reality in this eerie, disturbing, and romantic YA by award-winning author Marta Acosta

Poor, unloved, lonely, scared...what will this foster teen trade in exchange for everything she's always desired?

When elite Birch Grove Academy offers Jane Williams a full scholarship, she thinks she's finally escaped danger and violence. She's given her own cottage, a monthly allowance, and the chance to tutor the headmistress's gorgeous son.

It seems too good to be true. But the more she learns about Birch Grove, the more she comes to realize that she's walked right into an exquisite trap.

"Dark secrets, hidden mysteries, disquieting realities, passion and romance... without a doubt this is my favourite YA book of the year. Bloody brilliant!" —Love Vampires

Jane Williams, an orphaned 16-year-old living in urban foster care, animates a conventional YA plotâthe outsider with secrets who relocates and is forced to face painful truths about who she is. Boarding schools and touches of the paranormal are common to this genre, and Jane makes the giant leap from her group home to privileged boarder at the all-girls Birch Grove Academy. Buttressing adult author Acosta's (the Casa Dracula series) YA debut are nods to the gothic tradition and Jane Eyre parallels that she encourages through epigraphs, character names, and the events that unfold. Her well-drawn characters shineâJane especially, whose very nongothic life on the street makes for a gritty opening and influences the whole. Jack Radcliffe (the mountain-biking incarnation of Mr. Rochester) and Jane's clearly delineated classmates are vivid actors in the drama as well. Their strengths are masked somewhat by all the genre â¨apparatus around them, but even so, Acosta's story is an impressive contender in the crowded YA paranormal field. Ages 13âup. Agent: Alexandra Machinist, Janklow & Nesbit.
